1 plant in a 4 inch cup
(Capsicum chinense)- Peru is blessed with some pretty incredible chiles and this is one of the best! Charapita chiles are no bigger than a wild blueberry but they pack a potent aroma and heat to match, about the level of a mild habanero. The flavour is absolutely amazing and if you like hot peppers it's a must try.
It is often quoted as the most expensive Chile in the world. I can understand why. The fact that they are often harvested wild and the very small size would make it a very long job! As you see in one of my photos I counted 86 chiles in 1 oz.
Charapitas are great to eat fresh with a meal by squishing them with a fork and seasoning as you go, they also make delicious sauce. I once had them whole in a condiment at Culantro's Peruvian restaurant in Hamilton and it was to die for. See photo of spoon. It's not a regular menu item, he had just gotten chiles from me and spoiled me but I wanted to share with you.
I also want to mention a local hot sauce company who makes a Charapita hot sauce which is remarkable. What is truly special about his product is that it is made with wild harvested Charpitas in Peru, supporting small families and artisans in the process. Here's the link to check it out Tigers Milk
