The Pequin chille grows wild in Mexico and is almost 10 times hotter than a jalapeno.
The pods are very small and a slightly elongated oval. It starts of green and end up a bright red or red-orange, when it is fully mature. Once they are red the fruit pulls away from stem which stay attached to plant but if you harvest green the stem stays with fruit. The average size is 1-1.5 cm long and 0.5 cm wide, but do not let the size fool you. It is hot!
This chilli pepper is easy to grow and an amazing producer. It will look great in the garden, when it is full of little red pods. If you can overwinter it the plant will grow taller than you in second year!
Flavour wise it has a complex, smoky, citrus & nutty flavour. They are excellent for pickling, in salsa, soups or any dish very you want some heat. The green fruits usually are pickled and the red ones are mostly dried.
