Capsicum chinense
One of the hottest chillies on earth, Dorset Naga incongruously combines mouth-burning fire with a soothing rich aroma. Heat levels can exceed 1 million SHU, making the Dorset Naga a dream-come-true for even the most demanding thrill seeker. The wrinkled, cone-shaped fruit are often 4 to 5cm long and ripen from green to red, which is when they’re at their hottest.
The bushy plants do best either in the ground or large containers at least 7.5 litres in volume. They can grow very tall – sometimes topping a metre and more – and need strong support so that they don’t fall over.
Heat level: superhot (up to 1,221,000 SHU).
